How to connect a remote MCP memory server to any AI app
Last updated
An MCP memory server is a service your AI apps reach over the Model Context Protocol to save notes and search them later. A remote one runs on the internet, so there is nothing to install: you give the app the server's URL, sign in, and restart the app. For Memlo the URL is https://memlo.ai/mcp, and sign-in is standard MCP OAuth with your own account.
Local or remote
A local MCP memory server runs on your computer, usually as a command the app starts, and stores notes in a file or a local database. It is private by default and needs no account, but only the apps on that computer can use it.
A remote server runs as a web service. Every app you sign in to, on any computer or phone, reads the same memories. It needs an account and a sign-in, and you trust the service with what you save. Memlo is a remote server.
The settings any MCP client needs
- URL:
https://memlo.ai/mcp. It must end in/mcp. - Transport: Streamable HTTP. Choose "HTTP" or "Streamable HTTP", not "SSE": there is no separate SSE endpoint.
- Sign-in: OAuth. Leave the client ID and secret empty unless the app requires them; apps register themselves.
- Restart: most apps load MCP servers only when they start. Restart the app or reload its window after adding the server.
claude.ai and Claude Desktop
Add Memlo as a custom connector on claude.ai in a browser:
- Open Customize, then Connectors.
- Choose "Add custom connector".
- Name: Memlo. Remote MCP server URL:
https://memlo.ai/mcp. Leave the OAuth client ID and secret empty. - Choose Add, then Connect, and sign in to Memlo in the page that opens.
- Start a new chat. If the tools are not offered, open the chat's + menu, then Connectors, and switch Memlo on.
A connector added on claude.ai also appears in Claude Desktop and the Claude mobile apps on the same Claude account. Quit Claude Desktop fully and open it again so it loads the connector; closing the window is not enough.
ChatGPT
This needs a paid ChatGPT plan that offers custom MCP servers.
- Open Plugins on chatgpt.com, choose the + button, then "Add custom MCP server".
- Name: Memlo. Server URL:
https://memlo.ai/mcp. Authentication: OAuth, with the client ID and secret left empty. - Choose "Create as a plugin", then Connect, and sign in to Memlo.
- In a chat, type
@and choose Memlo to use it in that conversation.
Gemini
On gemini.google.com, open Settings, then Connected apps, and under Custom apps choose "Add a custom app". Enter https://memlo.ai/mcp, choose Next and sign in to Memlo. Google offers custom apps only to some accounts; the setup page lists the conditions.
VS Code
Add the server to .vscode/mcp.json in your project:
{
"servers": {
"memlo": {
"type": "http",
"url": "https://memlo.ai/mcp"
}
}
}
Start the server from VS Code and sign in to Memlo when it asks.
Claude Code and Codex
Both have one-line setup commands. See Claude Code memory and Codex memory.
Check that it works
In a new chat or session, ask the app to use the whoami tool. It answers with your Memlo account. Then list_spaces shows your spaces and how many memories each holds.
Frequently asked questions
What is an MCP memory server?
A service that gives AI apps tools to save notes and search them later, over the Model Context Protocol. The app's model decides when to call the tools, for example to look up a past decision before it answers.
Why does my app say the server needs authentication?
The app has not finished signing in, or its sign-in has expired. Sign in again from the app's MCP or connector settings. Sign-in has to be done by you in the browser; an agent cannot do it for you.
The connector never finishes connecting. What is wrong?
Usually the URL. It must be exactly https://memlo.ai/mcp. Remove the connector and add it again with /mcp at the end.
Which apps can use Memlo?
Claude Code, Codex, claude.ai, Claude Desktop, ChatGPT, the Gemini web app, VS Code, and other MCP clients that support remote servers with OAuth sign-in and a loopback or https callback address.
Is there an SSE endpoint?
No. Memlo serves Streamable HTTP only, at https://memlo.ai/mcp.
